Choose Wisely

It's no secret that life is hard and we all face tough decisions along the way. For that very reason, it is critical to surround yourself with people who are good examples and role models, regardless of their age or yours. How many times have we looked back upon our lives to find ourselves viewing the wreckage and devastation of bad choices, destruction and poor judgment calls. If we are truthful with ourselves, we will discover that many of those decisions, choices and judgment calls were made without wise counsel, thought or influence. At least in my life, I can attribute most, if not all, of my bad decisions to ignorance, selfishness or wishful hoping. I sought the counsel of people as foolish and ignorant as I and proceeded to my folly. I see now that if I had a strong role model whom I could have looked to, my regrets would not be so numerous. Whether it be Joan of Arc, Gandhi or someone in your life, it is crucial to have a voice of reason and wisdom to look to in times of decision, judgment calls which will affect your character, or even how to live everyday life. Do not choose weak-minded people or those lacking a strong character just because you feel a sense of obligation due to their role in your life. Instead, look to those who have proven themselves when put to the test and you have observed their everyday decisions and conduct. Personally, I will never take health advice from a doctor who smokes, weight loss tips from someone who is overweight, financial advice from a broke person or advice from a fool. A few of my most trusted role models are Jesus, Uncle Tom (from Uncle Tom's Cabin and yes, I know he is a fictional character, however, I can only aspire to be as forgiving, loving, patient, humble and gentle as he), and Dr. Patricia Francis. If you are chosen to be a role model for someone else, please live a life worthy of the honor of that calling.

A question to ponder: Is your life worthy of being a positive role model to someone else?
